Below, and attached here, is a set of questions that have been put together and are being offered as a tool to assist in questioning candidates in the upcoming Federal Election. We hope you find this useful in guiding how you might cast your vote in the remaining days of this election period. Attached here is the detailed Issues Paper that gives greater explanation to the issues identified.
Executive Director, NLPSPA &
Chair, NL Seniors & Pensioners’ Coalition
The NL Seniors & Pensioners’ Coalition (of which the NLPSPA is the Lead Association) is offering forward the following questions, with some notes for each, that you are welcome to use if contacted by any candidates seeking your vote during this federal election. It is important to keep these issues front and centre and we ask your support in addressing at least one of them with any candidate who approaches you.
- Will your party commit to the immediate implementation of a national pharmacare program?
National Pharmacare has been promised since the establishment of medicare many years ago, but Canadians are still waiting. Canadians demand a national pharmacare system that is universal and transferrable. What is your party’s position on this much promised but never delivered basic need to better the health outcomes of Canadians?
- Will your party implement a National Seniors’ Strategy that includes national standards for long-term care?
Enforced principles and national standards for long-term care, developed in collaboration with provincial and territorial governments are crucial components of a national seniors’ strategy. These standards will ensure a standard level of quality care, equitable and consistent services across the country, adequate levels of funding, and ensures greater public accountability. Will your party commit to a national seniors’ strategy and national long-term care standards?
- WHAT WILL YOUR PARTY DO TO IMPROVE HOME & COMMUNITY CARE AND LONG-TERM INSTITUTIONAL CARE?
Home care, community care, and respite care must be the foundations of our health care system for older and vulnerable persons. We must move away from an acute care model to a community-based model that focuses care within our family and communities. What will your party do to drive this direction? Will you commit to the shifting of resources from acute care to community-based programs, such as funding income tax rebates for family caregivers, vaccinations, home care, respite services, improvement to wait times, etc.?
Covid-19 brutally exposed the outrageous deficiencies of our long-term care system. While it is a provincial responsibility, the federal government can play a big role in creating national performance standards and making sure the provinces follow them. What will your party do about this?
- WHAT WILL YOUR PARTY DO TO IMPROVE FINANCIAL SECURITY FOR SENIORS?
How about increasing the OAS by at least 10%, and CPP survivor benefits by at least 25%, for people over 65? What about better protection for pensions? What about stronger investor protection? What will your party do in this area?
- Please feel free to ask your own questions of any candidate that comes knocking on your door or makes a telephone call to you.
